The Serbian sensation, Ana Ivanovic won the quarter-final of French Open, defeating Ukrainian Elina Svitolina to reach the French semi since 2008. It seems that Ana is getting her old form back gradually which she lacked in the past years. It will be her first Grand Slam semifinal in seven years after winning her lone major trophy here back in 2008.
Ana, seventh seeded, took only an hour and a quarter to crush 19th-seeded Svitolina to secure a 6-3, 6-2 win to reach the semis. On the Court Philippe Chatrieron, she remained calm to control the windy weather and dominated her opponent throughout the match.
“I don’t know if I should feel really old or really happy,” Ana said in her Courtside post-match interview. Ana was able to get back in the top five ranking last year with her brilliant performances, but she has struggled from the beginning of this year as she injured her toe in Australia in January. Ana was 27th in the WTA ranking when she entered the tournament.
She admitted that she had to go through a tough period to reach this platform. “It’s been a long road and hard work. Today was a very, very tough match, even though the score doesn’t indicate that. It was tough conditions; it was obviously for both of us, but very, very gusty. I really tried to just execute my game plan and tried to move more, because in the windy conditions, that’s what you have to do.”
The wind caused more trouble to Svitolina, who was facing her first Grand Slam quarter-final. The Ukrainian couldn’t handle the pressure; on the other hand, 27-year-old experienced Ana kept up her good work to finish the match with 28 forehand winners.
Ana will face Lucie Safarova in the semi-final who defeated Maria Sharapova few days earlier.
